why do we need money?
we do not HAVE to purchase anything from china. we have iron, oil, coal, steel, wood, wool, all right HERE in AMERICA, why can we not just use what WE have and not think about what we NEED. i mean, look at people nowadays, strutting around with their little "ipods", listening with enough room to hole 10,000 songs, heck, i do not even know 50 songs to put on a Mp3 player.
we can make all we need perfectly well, food, shoes, clothing, all with the resources we have RIGHT HERE. so why do we need money? i do not need a ipod, a cell phone, a high-tech toothbrush. i can live with the ordinary. maybe not Amish but ordinary.
i can take 50 dollars and get enough food to last me a month at the right store. no name brand needed. if we really need money, than send it overseas to the poor folk that live there. so they can become self-sufficient like we could be.
Protectionism always fails. Global trade upon the principles of comparative advantage will help all nations economies grow.
To you, it may seem right to only spend so much and be able to survive; to others this would be classified as subservience.
Although you can survive on fewer moneys, your influence as a human being is greater than just surviving by yourself, you can help another while satisfactorily living life. The idea that you bought a toy made in China, actually put someone to work. This is one way to look at you providing assistance to others through purchase of their work. What I have just described is really what consumerism is.
I believe however, that only a partial part of consumerism is right. Helping others while helping yourself is good, but I disagree with consumerism. I have been searching for the connection for some time now and believe I stumbled upon it tonight. The reason why consumerism is not very efficient is due to gains and losses by fast depreciation! The ipod you mention quickly lost value after purchase. The extra money spent after 50 bucks of food is almost immediately lost!
So, to a certain extent, I agree with you: we can't really afford to buy useless stuff.
The idea of "saving" our reserves of iron, coal, steel, etc. is that we don't have the comparative advantage of doing so right now, or so that's what the government thinks. We can't drill, baby, drill due to our mixed economy. This part of the mix is the command economic thought of locking up our natural resources so as to provide some sort of comparative advantage down the road.
